Work on the Main Exhibition Building, the largest structure of the 1876 Centennial in Philadelphia's Fairmount Park, is captured here in October 1875, months before the hall was finished. Its iron and glass frame stretched roughly 1,880 feet, and it would open the following spring as the fair's centerpiece, a showcase for the young nation's industrial ambitions. The Centennial Photographic Company, which documented the exhibition as it took shape, made sepia prints like this one. The date comes from an old caption card, so it is worth treating as provisional.
