Madison Square in New York appears lit up for the Fourth of July in 1876, the centennial of the Declaration of Independence. This wood engraving was made from a sketch by Edwin Austin Abbey and ran in Harper's Weekly on July 22 of that year. Across the country that summer, cities marked the anniversary with parades, bunting, and fireworks, and New York's evening displays drew large crowds to its public squares. Abbey, who later became a well-known illustrator and muralist, was still early in his career, so the drawing offers a glimpse of his work for the magazine at that stage.
