Union Square in New York City, lit up for the Fourth of July in 1876, is the scene here, with fireworks and crowds marking the nation's hundredth birthday. The wood engraving, drawn by Schell & Hogan, appeared in Harper's Weekly on July 22, 1876, a few weeks after the holiday. Civic illuminations like this were a common way for American cities to mark the Centennial, the same year that drew large crowds to the exhibition in Philadelphia. Harper's relied on engravings such as this one to bring scenes of public celebration to readers who could not attend in person.
