A woman draped in flags is the central figure in this c1876 print, titled *The Banner* and identified as one of Sarony's Centennial tableaux. The photographer, Napoleon Sarony, was a New York studio portraitist known for theatrical and staged pictures, and tableaux vivants, in which costumed performers held still in a composed pose, were a popular entertainment of the period. The date places the image around the nation's 1876 centennial, when patriotic imagery was everywhere, and this picture turns that mood into a single arranged scene. The caption information is unverified, so the exact occasion and the sitter remain uncertain.
