Few places felt the Centennial's crowds more sharply than Philadelphia's hotels, and this *Harper's Weekly* cover from late May 1876 turns that pressure into a scene of scrambling for rooms. The Centennial Exhibition opened in Fairmount Park on May 10, 1876, to mark the nation's hundredth birthday, and the city had far fewer beds than the visitors arriving by rail. Charles Stanley Reinhart, a regular illustrator for Harper's, drew the design, which was engraved on wood for reproduction on the magazine's cover. The print offers a lively record of how the fair spilled into everyday life in the city.
