Girard Avenue Bridge, which spans the Schuylkill River toward the fairgrounds, gives this wood engraving its vantage point on the Centennial buildings. It appeared in *Harper's Weekly* on May 6, 1876, days before the Centennial Exhibition opened in Fairmount Park that month to mark a century since the Declaration of Independence. For many readers outside Philadelphia, engravings like this one were their first look at the fair's large exhibition halls, and the view shows how the new structures rose above the river landscape.
