Drawn from an elevated vantage point, this hand-colored lithograph lays out the whole Fairmount Park site in Philadelphia before the 1876 Centennial Exhibition opened. Currier & Ives issued it in New York in 1875, when the grounds were still taking shape for the fair that marked the nation's hundredth anniversary. The exhibition's large halls, including the main exhibition building and Machinery Hall, were meant to show American industry and invention to millions of visitors. Looking at the layout today, you can see how the fair was organized around these buildings, and how much of the park's design was built to hold them.
