The turret in this stereograph is a rotating gun housing modeled on the Union ironclad USS Monitor, the vessel that fought the Confederate CSS Virginia at Hampton Roads in March 1862. John Ericsson's design put heavy guns inside a low, revolving iron cylinder, an idea that influenced naval construction on both sides of the Atlantic for decades. Its display at the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia, a fair marking the nation's 100th birthday, let visitors see a Civil War innovation as a piece of national progress. The card's caption tracings also list a name, Friedrich Krupp, whose connection to this object the record does not explain.
