Taken in 1875, this view shows the U.S. Government Building while it was still under construction in Fairmount Park, about a year before the fair opened. The Centennial Exhibition, held in Philadelphia in 1876, marked the hundredth anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, and the federal building was one of its major structures, housing displays from government departments and agencies. A commercial studio made the photograph during the building work, so it records the scale of the project and the raw framing before the finished exhibition halls took shape.
