Inside the Government Building at the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia's Fairmount Park, this view captures a display from the Coast Survey, the federal agency responsible for charting the nation's coastlines and harbors. The exhibition marked the hundredth anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and drew millions of visitors that summer, with federal agencies showing their work alongside exhibitors from around the world. The sepia print was made by the Centennial Photo. Co., a firm that documented the fair's buildings and displays.
