The Main Building of the 1876 Centennial Exhibition was the largest structure on the grounds in Fairmount Park, Philadelphia, and this hand-colored lithograph by Currier & Ives shows its long facades and central sweep as the fair's visitors would have seen them. The exhibition marked the 100th anniversary of American independence, and the Main Building housed a broad survey of manufactured goods, machinery and industrial design from the United States and abroad. Currier & Ives, the New York firm best known for inexpensive popular prints, issued many views of the fair that brought the event to people who could not travel to Philadelphia. The print's date is given only as a range, so it was likely produced around the time of the exhibition or in the years that followed.
