The Centennial Fountain stood in Fairmount Park, the large Philadelphia park that hosted the 1876 Centennial Exhibition, held to mark a century since the Declaration of Independence. The exhibition drew millions of visitors over its six months, and fountains and landscaped grounds were among the park's main attractions. Photographic views of such sites were sold widely as souvenirs, and this print's copyright registration suggests it was made for that commercial market. The date is approximate, and the photographer's identity in the record is not confirmed.
