Seen from a high vantage point over Fairmount Park, this hand-colored lithograph lays out the main buildings of the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia as one sweeping panorama. The fair marked the hundredth anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and opened in 1876, with showpieces such as the enormous Main Exhibition Building and Machinery Hall displaying American industry. New York publisher Currier & Ives issued the print in 1875, a year before the gates opened, so it reflects the fair's plans and promotion more than the crowds who later filled the grounds.
