Along State Avenue, one of the main walks through the Centennial grounds in Philadelphia's Fairmount Park, the states had built their own pavilions, and this view looks west down that row. The engraving was cut from sketches by Theodore R. Davis, a Harper's Weekly illustrator who worked at the fair, and it ran in the magazine on November 11, 1876. The exhibition marked the nation's hundredth year, and wood engravings like this one gave readers far from Philadelphia a way to see its crowds and buildings. The record's caption notes are unverified, so the specific structures shown are worth checking against the magazine's text.
