State Avenue at the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia was lined with buildings erected by individual states and territories, which served as gathering places and offices for their visitors. This wood engraving, published in *Harper's Weekly* on June 3, 1876, shows one of these headquarters while the fair was in its first weeks. The Centennial marked a century since the Declaration of Independence, and the weekly's engravers, working from sketches and photographs, gave readers far from Fairmount Park a detailed view of the grounds.
