Rather than a single view of the grounds, this wood engraving collects a series of small comic scenes, presented as "random shots" by the magazine's special artist. Harper's Weekly sent illustrators to the Centennial Exhibition in Fairmount Park, Philadelphia, which opened in 1876 to mark the hundredth anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Artists sketched on site, and engravers then carved their drawings into wood blocks for printing. Such lighthearted vignettes show how visitors and crowds were drawn for a readership eager for lively glimpses of the fair.
