Memorial Hall, one of the few permanent structures from the 1876 Centennial Exposition, anchors this view of President Ulysses S. Grant formally declaring the fair open. The exposition in Fairmount Park, Philadelphia, marked the nation's 100th anniversary and drew large crowds to its exhibition halls. This image is a lantern slide copied from a wood engraving that originally ran in an illustrated newspaper, so it reflects how the event was pictured for a reading public that could not attend in person.
