Reinhart's sketches, gathered under the heading "Bits from our artist's sketch-book," appeared in *Harper's Weekly* on June 3, 1876, only weeks after the Centennial Exhibition opened in Philadelphia's Fairmount Park. The fair marked a century since the Declaration of Independence and drew large crowds to its halls, machinery and displays from the United States and abroad. *Harper's*, one of the leading illustrated weeklies of the day, relied on artists such as Reinhart to show readers scenes they could not see for themselves. Small vignettes like these capture the bustle and novelty of the grounds.
