Here the joke is aimed at a "deadhead," slang for someone admitted free of charge, who finds himself the subject of a camera. Charles Stanley Reinhart drew the scene as one of several "bits" from his sketch-book for *Harper's Weekly*, where it appeared on page 452 of the June 3, 1876, issue. That spring the Centennial Exhibition had opened in Philadelphia's Fairmount Park to mark the nation's hundredth birthday, and illustrated weeklies like *Harper's* offered readers a lively, behind-the-scenes look at its crowds and everyday mishaps.
