This wood engraving is one of several sketches grouped under the heading "Bits from our artist's sketch-book," and its title points to a Spanish soldier and an Egyptian figure, rather than to the exposition grounds as a whole. Such small, informal vignettes were a staple of illustrated weeklies in 1876, when readers wanted quick glimpses of the crowds and foreign visitors at the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia's Fairmount Park. The exhibition marked the hundredth anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and drew millions of visitors, many drawn by its pavilions of foreign nations. The engraving records the lively, cosmopolitan mix that made the fair a showcase of the wider world.
