Two heads of state stand at the controls of the Corliss steam engine in this wood engraving, President Ulysses S. Grant and Emperor Pedro II of Brazil, shown launching the machinery at the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia. The engine, built by George Corliss, drove the belts and shafts that powered Machinery Hall, and its opening was one of the fair's most public moments. Theodore R. Davis sketched the scene, and Harper's Weekly printed the engraving in its May 27, 1876, issue, showing how widely the event was followed.
