Crowds seeking lodging in Philadelphia form the subject of this wood engraving, which Charles S. Reinhart drew for *Harper's Weekly* in its May 27, 1876, issue. That was just weeks after the Centennial Exhibition opened in Fairmount Park on May 10, marking the hundredth anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. The fair drew visitors from across the country, and the city's hotels could not keep up with demand. The scene captures the jostle and urgency of a city trying to house a sudden wave of tourists.
