Among the many engraved views of the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial, this one looks down State Avenue, one of the avenues running through the exhibition grounds. The Centennial International Exhibition opened in May 1876 to mark the hundredth anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, drawing large crowds to pavilions, gardens and exhibition halls. Wood engravings like this were how many readers saw such events, and this scene appeared in *Harper's Weekly* in August 1876. The catalog data behind this record is old and unverified, so check details beyond the title and publication before relying on them.
