Cadets from West Point pitched their tents on Georges Hill, a rise in Fairmount Park, and this stereograph shows that encampment looking across to the grounds of the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia. The fair marked the 100th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and drew millions of visitors to its exhibition halls and temporary buildings. The card was made by George Barker of Niagara Falls, New York, who issued views like this one for viewing through a stereoscope, which gave the scene a sense of depth. Its pairing of military camp and fairgrounds makes it a useful record of how the celebration was staged.
