The sunset view of Machinery Hall in this color lithograph shows one of the largest structures at the Centennial Exhibition, which opened in Fairmount Park in Philadelphia in 1876 to mark the nation's hundredth year. The print was issued by Brett Litho. Co. of New York around 1875, when the fair was still under construction and publicity images like this one helped build interest in the event. Machinery Hall housed steam engines and industrial exhibits, and its vast roof and open interior made it a showpiece of the exhibition. Color lithographs were a popular way to circulate such views in the 1870s, before halftone photography became common in print.
