The view shows Camp Washington, a encampment near the Centennial grounds in Philadelphia, photographed in July 1876, about two months after the Centennial Exposition opened in Fairmount Park on May 10. The fair marked the nation's hundredth birthday and drew large summer crowds to the park's western side, where temporary camps and quarters were a common sight. The record gives no maker's date, and the name on the shelflist card is unverified, so the picture is best read as an early document of the fairground during its first season.
