Taken about two years after the fair closed, this view shows the Centennial grounds in Fairmount Park, Philadelphia, with its buildings and walks still standing. The Centennial International Exhibition of 1876 marked the hundredth anniversary of American independence and drew millions of visitors to a sprawling complex of exhibition halls, pavilions, and gardens. Many of those structures were built to be temporary, so photographs taken after the exhibition ended are among the best surviving records of how the site looked.
