At the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia, this engraving focuses on a piece of art furniture with open shelving, shown in a display by the London firm Howard & Sons. The Centennial, held in Fairmount Park to mark the hundredth anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, drew large crowds and showcased decorative arts from many countries. *Harper's Weekly* ran the scene on its cover in October 1876, turning a photograph by the Centennial Photograph Company into a wood engraving. The print shows how European furniture makers presented their work to American visitors.
