A 1960 editorial cartoon by Gib Crockett, published in the *Washington Star*, uses the Civil War centennial as its punchline and takes aim at the sectional tensions running through that year's politics. The joke depends on the calendar: the commemoration of the 1861 to 1865 war was set to run from 1961 through 1965, so the title's remark about "next year" is a mistake. The cartoon names Chester Bowles, a former Connecticut governor and prominent Democrat, which ties the satire to the party's platform debates over regional loyalties and civil rights that spring.
