Buzzard Pete" survives as an 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate negative, a large format that photographers of the period favored for detailed work. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made and sold views of the American West and beyond as prints and postcards in the early 1900s, produced it around 1905. The plate has a crack down its left side and was given to the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949, showing how such negatives often moved through regional collections before reaching national holdings. The record does not identify the sitter, so the picture is best read through its format and the publisher's commercial purpose.
