Duplessis is credited with this steel engraving of Benjamin Franklin, who was born in 1706 and died in 1790. The caption card records no date, but the image fits the years Franklin spent in France as the American envoy, from 1776 to 1785, when his likeness was widely reproduced in prints for French and American audiences. Franklin, the printer, scientist and diplomat, became one of the most recognizable faces of the new republic. The attribution comes from an unverified caption card, so the details of this particular impression should be read with that in mind.
