Franklin appears here in the fur-collared likeness that Joseph Siffred Duplessis painted in the late 1770s, when Franklin was serving as American envoy in Paris. The painting became one of the most widely copied images of him, and reproductions like this photolithograph carried its learned, informal look to viewers who never saw the original canvas. The caption card gives no date for this print, so its exact production period is uncertain. Still, the popularity of the source painting made it a common model for later engravings and printed portraits of Franklin.
