Titled simply as a portrait of Eva Gamble Walborn, this platinum print dates from about 1900 and is signed on its mount. It is one of the artistic photographs that Frances Benjamin Johnston, a prominent American photographer, assembled and gave to the Library of Congress in 1948. Platinum printing, valued for its soft tonal range and matte surface, was a favored process among pictorialist photographers of the period, who sought to make photography an expressive art rather than a plain record. The print was later included in the 2001 exhibition *Ambassadors of Progress*.
