Three standing figures fill this plate from *Les costumes populaires de la Turquie en 1873*, labeled by social station: an Albanian (arnaout) of the middle class, an Albanian of the poor class, and a peasant from the countryside around Yania, the Ottoman town now called Ioannina in northwestern Greece. The book was produced by Hamdy Bey and Marie de Launay, with photographs by the Constantinople studio of Sébah, and this copy is a photomechanical reproduction. The contrast between the three is the point, since their clothing signals rank and region as much as personal taste. The series was meant to record the dress of the empire's many peoples for a European readership.
