Three women stand side by side on a single plate, each labeled for a different corner of the Ottoman Empire: a Vlach woman from Yania (Ioannina), a Christian woman from Preveza, and a peasant woman from the countryside around Trikala. The photogravure reproduces a studio photograph by the Istanbul firm of Sébah and appeared in *Les costumes populaires de la Turquie en 1873*, a costume survey compiled by Hamdy Bey and Marie de Launay. Its caption also appears in Ottoman Turkish, which reflects the book's aim of presenting regional dress to both European and Ottoman readers. The plates record clothing and ornament as they were worn in the 1870s, making them useful evidence of the empire's varied communities.
