Little is recorded about this glass negative beyond its title, Patten, which the catalog notes flag as unverified from a sleeve, and a number, 1668, scratched into the emulsion. Dated 1860, it was made by the wet collodion process, in which a glass plate had to be coated, exposed, and developed while still wet, so each negative took considerable care and time. Although it belongs to a Civil War glass negative collection at the Library of Congress, the date places it just before the war began in 1861. The photographer, David B. Woodbury, died in 1866.
