Labeled with the name P.J. Osterhaus on its sleeve, this 1860 wet collodion glass negative carries an identification the Library of Congress has not verified, so the sitter's identity remains provisional. The name matches Peter Joseph Osterhaus, a German-born officer who rose to Union general during the Civil War. The negative was made by David B. Woodbury, a photographer who died in 1866, and it is part of a larger Civil War glass negative collection. Wet collodion plates had to be coated, exposed and developed while still wet, making them a demanding but revealing record of prewar studio work.
