A Parrott rifle, a rifled cast-iron piece with a wrought-iron band reinforcing its breech, is the subject here, and the title's question mark suggests that its target, possibly Fort Sumter in Charleston harbor, was never confirmed. The image survives as a stereograph, a pair of nearly identical views that a stereoscope fused into one image with apparent depth, a popular format for home viewing during and after the war. Its wet collodion glass negative was made in 1862, when Union forces were trying to reduce Confederate coastal defenses in the South. The photographer, David B. Woodbury, died in 1866. The scratched annotation on the negative points to a published reference set, Francis Trevelyan Miller's photographic history of the war.
