Hudson Maxim, the American inventor and explosives expert, is the subject of this glass negative, made by the National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio that photographed public figures and government life in the early twentieth century. Maxim is best known for developing smokeless powder and the explosive Maximite, and by the 1920s he was a prolific writer and lecturer on military and scientific matters. The record dates the negative to about 1922 but labels the title as unverified, so the identification rests on the studio's own notes. Visitors should also note the streaks and blemishes on the glass, which come from the natural breakdown of the original coating.
