Golfer Gene Sarazen is the subject here, though the title comes from unverified notes the National Photo Company wrote on its negative sleeves, and the date of about 1922 is inferred from neighboring negatives. That was the year the 20-year-old Sarazen won the U.S. Open at Skokie, Illinois, an early sign of the career that later made him one of the sport's best-known players. The National Photo Company was a Washington, D.C., studio that documented public figures and events in the early twentieth century, and its glass plates came to the Library of Congress as a gift in 1947. Faint streaks on the glass come from the natural breakdown of the original coating.
