The glass negative is labeled "Gen'l Sarazen" and dated May 24, 1924, placing the golfer Gene Sarazen early in his professional career. He had won the U.S. Open in 1922 while still in his early twenties, and by 1924 he was one of the sport's rising names. The National Photo Company, which operated in Washington, D.C., supplied press images like this one during the 1910s and 1920s. The negative shows streaks and blemishes from deterioration of its original coating, a common condition in glass plates of this age.
