Rock City is a garden of narrow stone paths and rock formations on the top of Lookout Mountain, near Chattanooga, on the Tennessee side of the Georgia line. The site was developed as a tourist attraction in the 1930s, when visitors came up the mountain to walk among its crevices and reach viewpoints that look out over several states. Its name and the large painted signs that once appeared on barns across the South helped turn it into a familiar roadside landmark. Worth noticing in a picture like this is how the sandstone outcrops and gorges were shaped into a walkable route, a mix of natural landscape and deliberate design.
