Umbrella Rock is a sandstone outcrop on the western face of Lookout Mountain, the ridge that rises above Chattanooga, Tennessee, and this stereograph captures the rock as tourists of the early twentieth century would have encountered it. Keystone View Company of Meadville, Pennsylvania, produced such stereo cards in large numbers around 1905, selling them through parlor viewers so that families could see distant landscapes in apparent three dimensions. Lookout Mountain was a popular destination in that era, drawing visitors to its overlooks and rock formations, and the Civil War battle fought on its slopes in 1863 added to its appeal.
