Lookout Mountain, rising above the Tennessee River near Chattanooga, is the specific landmark this engraving shows, and its record ties it to the Battle of Lookout Mountain on November 24, 1863. Union forces under Joseph Hooker fought Confederate troops on its slopes and summit in a fight often called the "Battle Above the Clouds," because low fog often hid the lower slopes from view. The scene was drawn from a sketch by an artist named Moser and printed as a wood engraving in Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper in January 1887, nearly a quarter century after the fighting. Such views helped postwar readers picture battlefields that had become tourist destinations.
