Lookout Mountain rises above the Tennessee River valley near Chattanooga, and the view from the Point takes in a wide sweep of the river bends and the surrounding ridges. Views like this drew visitors to the mountain long before the Civil War, and the overlook later became one of the best-known vantage points in the South. The area was the site of the Battle of Lookout Mountain in November 1863, when Union forces fought their way up the slopes, and the scenery remained a major draw for tourists and photographers in the decades that followed. The landscape is worth studying for how little of it has changed in its broad outline even as the surrounding city grew.
