Lookout Mountain, on the Georgia-Tennessee line above Chattanooga, is known for its sandstone ledges and rock formations, and this picture turns the camera toward those natural shapes rather than the visitors who gathered around them. The mountain drew tourists from the late 1800s onward, when rail lines and hotels made the view from its edge a popular destination. Images like this one helped establish the ledges as a landmark of the region. Look closely at how the rock layers and weathered outcrops are framed, since they show the scale of the stone against the sky.
