Umbrella Rock is a sandstone outcrop on Lookout Mountain, the ridge that rises above Chattanooga on the Tennessee River, and its name comes from the broad, flat cap of stone that shelters the rock beneath it. Lookout Mountain was a popular resort destination in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when visitors rode the incline railway up the slope to view the Tennessee Valley and nearby Civil War battlefields. Postcard and stereoview makers of the period often photographed such formations, so the picture likely served as a souvenir of the trip up the mountain.
