Here the Tennessee River loops in a sharp bend around Moccasin Bend before it turns southwest toward Alabama. The river shaped Chattanooga from its early days, when boats and later railroads made the town a shipping point in the Tennessee Valley. Its position also made it a prize during the Civil War, and the 1863 fighting around the city, with Lookout Mountain and Missionary Ridge nearby, still draws visitors interested in that period. The river's course through town explains much of the city's growth.
