Ferry crossings were once the main way to get people and wagons across the Tennessee River at Chattanooga, long before the city's bridges were built. This picture shows one of those flat-bottomed boats at work on the water, a reminder of how much daily travel and trade depended on river crossings in the nineteenth century. Chattanooga grew up around the river's bend and rail lines, and the ferry was part of that busy riverfront life. Look at the boat's crew and cargo for a sense of how ordinary transport worked before steel bridges changed the town.
