Looking east from the heights of Lookout Mountain, this view takes in the bend of the Tennessee River and the city of Chattanooga spread along its banks. The vantage point is what sets the scene apart: the mountain rises steeply above the valley, so the river and town appear below like a map. Chattanooga grew up around the river as a rail and trade hub, and its position at the junction of several routes made it a prize during the Civil War, when fighting for the city and surrounding ridges was fierce in 1863. Views like this one were popular with nineteenth-century visitors, who came to see the landscape and the battlefields that lay within sight.
